Sustainable Tourism
Türkiye is actively developing sustainable tourism to protect its natural, cultural and social assets while promoting long-term economic growth in the tourism sector. This means creating travel experiences that respect the environment, support local communities and preserve cultural heritage for future generations.
National Sustainable Tourism Program
The Turkish government, together with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), has introduced the Turkey Sustainable Tourism Program (TR-I). This framework sets national sustainability standards that align with globally recognised criteria from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
The TR-I program covers four main areas:
-
Sustainable management
-
Socio-economic impacts
-
Cultural sustainability
-
Environmental sustainability
Businesses such as hotels and tourism operators are encouraged (and increasingly required) to obtain sustainability certification, helping to raise quality standards and promote responsible tourism practices across the country.
Why It Matters
Sustainable tourism in Türkiye focuses on:
-
Protecting nature and cultural heritage for future generations
-
Supporting local economies and creating jobs
-
Encouraging eco-friendly travel options and community participation
-
Meeting global environmental goals through responsible policies and certification standards

In short, Türkiye’s sustainable tourism efforts aim to balance tourism growth with environmental care and cultural preservation — ensuring that visitors enjoy not just beautiful destinations, but also experiences that leave a positive impact.
